Art Photographs
In
the past, my photography has involved integrating primal or
primitive images with retrieved internalized instincts and
images. Polaroid emulsion manipulation allows me to create
an imaginary world outside the bounds of normal photography.
I feel my work is a kind of personal archeology with the viewer
being forced to puzzle over and identify with the images as
though discovering a lost civilization. Most recently, I have
been photographing references to modern civilization and again
manipulating the photo emulsion. These new primitive simulations
provide an interesting curiosity: the juxtaposition of a contemporary
image in a archeological context. Each image seems to convey
a sense of what future civilizations may find from us.
The
process starts with manipulating the 3"x3" Polaroid
image soon after it comes from the SX-70 camera. After altering
the image on the face of the print, I then cut it open to
reveal the inside of the Polaroid print. A partially distorted
latent photo image is revealed in the pastel-like photo emulsion.
I then hand color the photo emulsion in most of the prints.
The final product is a tactile 3"x3" representation
of the original photograph embedded in the emulsion. In other
words, the emulsion from inside the Polaroid print is exhibited.
The small original print is then photographed with a large
format camera. The large format negative allows for high definition
quality C-Prints of up to 48"x48" in size. Sizes
8"x10" - 48"x48".
